It is very much a foundation for knowledge to come (next semester when we discuss varieties of tests in depth), so I would advise to briefly review it prior to class if you have a chance.

That and of course be aware the proposals will be accepted as late as I possibly can, but that deadline is solid (Monday the the 7th by email, or earlier by hard copy if possible, with benefit of feedback). Many of you are right where you should be or even a bit ahead and working on methods, but a few -at least as of last week- still had far to go even for the introduction. Just be aware, and also of the fact that it is a sizable portion of your overall grade.
Take care,
Tim

Note to All Re Your Privacy

While I should have stated this previously, it honestly went without a huge amount of thought until I contemplated it today, so let me be sure to mention it now explicitly, so everyone can be aware.

1 As a Psych Instructor, often students reveal to me (as to all Psych Instructors) some personal issues or raise questions that are best considered private matters. I do not mind this at all as long as it is appropriate, etc, and I would never breach the teacher-student confidentiality expectation and rules (which cover disabilities for example) unless the issue were literally one of life or death (such as suicide or murder), or if I were forced to by subpoena.

With that said, I want you to note:

2 When you email from such a government 'owned' email address (i.e. ANY state college email) or TO such an address (such as ones that are assigned or requested as the default method of communication with your Instructor) ....

That Information is Considered School and Government Property and NOT private!

I just ask that you keep this in mind. In regards to all of your email, not just to me. I always invite email at my private address, but class related emails are most often required to go the school address. My understanding is Anyone in the college or gov can read these at any time for any reason (at least at public institutions). And many companies and non-government related entities enforce such a rule (check if you don't know!)
Just as an example, your work email might be examined without your permission or knowledge. Just be careful in the wilds of the Net.
Best wishes,
Tim

GSC 1101 Wednesday 11th

The slides are in the shared files folder for you to print, ("Development"). though they have been there a while, just pointing it out.
Also, keep an eye on email or the school's site and weather info info just in case we get into another flood situation, especially with all the commuters!
Cheers
Tim

GSC 1101 Slides...

....are in the shared files folder for you to print, ""Development"). Check out when all the deer are staring at the thing:

ow on to the just plain weird…Like many folks, we run trail cameras in order to census wildlife, as well as for security purposes. We have taken thousands and thousands of photographs over the years, and have never seen anything like the following…

Background: 182 photos on this camera. Email me with questions about the intro and I will answer asap.
Use your time wisely.
Thanks,
Tim

GSC 1101 Re Wednesday

please see your gsc mail re an important announcement
best Tim

All: Interesting Essay from an Original Milgram Obedience Participant

<span style="font-weight: bold; Questions come mainly from the slides we focus on in class, material not covered is not tested. Some bonus items will be on the test. blah blah blah

Addiction:

Defining addiction: continued use despite negative consequences

Define physical dependence. What’s the difference? Is physical dependence required to be an addict>?

Tolerance and withdrawal.

Alcohol abuse/drug abuse often co-morbid with other disorders. Pg 413.

Stimulation of the dopamine path pg 419

Treatment: specifically we discussed antabuse and medications which attempt to act on behavioristic principles to remove the reinforcement drugs provide.

Measuring outcomes in alc anon. we discussed problems in measuring success.

Sexual disorders

Remember, here especially, things are relative. What one couple finds pleasing another might find troubling, thus SUFFERING becomes the prime ideas behind deciding what constitutes a problem, EXCEPT in cases of victimization or law breaking (ie pedophilia)

Homosexuality in the DSM. Is it a disorder? It used to be. See pages 452-3

Paraphilias: we focused on fetishism (can’t achieve sexual fulfillment without an object or situation), voyeurs and exhibitionism, sadism and masochism.

Sexual dysfunctions included those of the desire, arousal and orgasm stage. Such as hypoactive desire, sex aversion. Premature ejaculation. Female orgasmic disorder

Treatment often behavioral. Remember discussion of pedophile treatment (shocks) and fetishes (pairing the fetish with more normal sex)

Schizophrenia

About 1%

Seems very much in part genetic. Recall the more genes you share with a schizophrenic the higher the chances of having it, pg 501

Hallucinations vs delucsions

Positive vs negative symptoms

Subtypes exist but we focused on the classic paranoid, and to a lesser degree the catatonic. What is the residual type?

Why facial tics so prevalent in schizophrenics? Dopamine medications

Is the bad mothering or double bind hypothesis still popular? What are they? How about the relation to flu exposure in utero?

Treatment

Very generally, understand behavioristic approaches (focus on behavior and changing it), cognitive approaches (changing thought), and to a lesser degree psychodynamic (uncovering deep dark stuff in the psyche) and humanistic (everybody strives to be a good person)

The rise and usefulness of antipsychotic drugs, antidepressants and antianxiety meds. Lithium for bipolar.

Eclectic (combination of all approaches) therapy most common.

When is ECT still used? Brain surgery?

Problems in assessing the effectiveness of treatment? People often just get better with time. Relate to idea of regression to the mean.

GSC 101

remember to turn in your cultural events review paper (if you haven't already done so) when you take the final.
